Rental Certification

We do not have a formal certification class at this time. Your first day of rental is considered your training day and we will work side by side with you as you learn. The training fee is part of your rental kit purchase. If you borrow a kit from a friend, there will be a $50 training fee your first day.

Please e-mail catherine@runningdoequilts.com to confirm trainer availability for your requested date ahead of your first rental.

If you don't have a quilt you would like to start on, we have always have charity quilts that need to be finished.

Things You Need

We have everything you need (except your quilts) bundled in our renter kits- linked below.

  • A set of Quilter's Connection Zippers (available at the shop). Each renter is responsible for their own set of zippers for loading quilts on the machine- you may find it useful to have multiple sets so you can prep all of your quilt backs at home and make the most of your rental day & not waste time loading.
  • A Handi- Quilter Bobbin Case (available at the shop). Bobbins are where a great deal of tension adjustment takes place on the longarm- having your own set to your preferences makes for a much smoother sew day.
  • Handi-Quilter Bobbins (available at the shop)
  • Handi Quilter needles (available in store). ***The rule of thumb is that you need one needle per quilt. Fresh needles in your preferred size for your thread help minimize tension issues.
  • Quilt tops, backs, & batting. Quilter's Dream Cotton Deluxe & Dream Wool are available in store.
  • Lunch- not required, but suggested. We have a full kitchen where you can store & warm up food so you don't need to take a break to eat.

Accessory bundle can be purchased here. We recommend ordering ahead of your first rental day to assure we have one waiting for you

Things We Provide

  • Longarm- we have 2 Handi- Quilter machines available for all day rental.
  • Thread- you are welcome to bring your own, but we have a large assortment of 40wt poly Glide threads available to use.
  • Oil- it is recommended to oil the bobbin casing after each bobbin.
  • Technical Support- you are expected to quilt your own quilts, but someone is always on hand to help you with any issues!

How Much Will You Get Done?

This varies based on quilter's experience, quilt size, & quilting density. We always recommend bringing more than you expect to get to just in case. Your first solo visit you may only finish 1, but after a few days you may be able to get 3-4 mid sized quilts done.

Custom quilting takes exponentially more time than E2E depending on complexity.

*Renters are not guaranteed to finish a certain amount of quilting. Some experienced quilters with smaller quilts & less involved quilting designs may finish up to 4 on a really productive day, others may only get through 1 quilt (2-3 is average). Tension troubles, computer errors, thread breaks, etc happen. They are part of a normal quilting day for any longarm quilter (especially when learning) & do not entitle the renter to any “make-up time”
